Can lean & agile be applied in furniture manufacturing???
Lean:It is a technique to reduce the waste including time and is used where demand is stable,product is standard.
Agile:It is a technique where customer specification is preferred,product variety & demand both are versatile.
now-a-days,these techniques are being applied in different industries.Furniture is highly fashionable product these days.Lean & Agile are opposite techniques.How can these two techniques be decoupled together?
The decoupled technique is termed as "Leagile".
Leagile means it has the minimum waste with greater flexibility.So,it can be applied in furniture industry.As the fashion trend changes suddenly,the demand is quite uncertain.
If only lean is applied,there will be no inventory of raw materials,finished products because holding inventory is considered as a waste in lean.So,if demand for a certain product increases,there will be a possibility of stock out which results in loss of business & goodwill as well as reputation.Also,the flexibility of the process
will be slowed down.
If only Agile is applied,there will be a huge variety of product made according to customer specification but the price will be high.Because it deals with only customer specification,not with cost reduction.
For getting advantages of both techniques,they should be decoupled.The problem is-where to decouple?
In the upstream,lean should be applied & in the downstream,agile should be applied.The upstream is-from the raw material supplier to production of components.Downstream is-from components inventory to final product.Thus,we can get the benefits of lean & agile.The supply chain system should be designed according to leagile.For details,
